Information about the Friends of Strathbeg Friends of Strathbeg is now officially in its 7 years old. However supplying bird food started back in 1990 under the then Aberdeen YOC banner. We somehow missed celebrating our 20th birthday last year but in that time the RSPB, directly or indirectly, has benefited to the tune of nearly £60,000. By far the major share helped fund projects at Loch of Strathbeg – from toilets to stairlifts to hides.
There are more interesting projects in the pipeline. For example improvements are proposed to the visitor centre; construction of a purpose built education room/indoor classroom; extending residential facilities for volunteers and exciting habitat improvements – watch out for announcements! However overall funding especially from the Lottery, remains problematic, partly following demands associated with the 2012 Olympic Games. Nevertheless we continue to supply bird food, feeders and nest boxes at competitive prices and hope to hand over another significant sum before too long. If we were able to secure a matching grant, the total sum raised could reach the fantastic figure of £100,000. Without your ongoing support this could never be achieved. Garden Bird Feeding Advice More feeders will provide room for more birds and allow more timid species a chance to feed. Avoid placing feeders and birdtables too close to cover where predators such as cats can lurk. Feed throughout the year to allow adult birds the chance to stay in good condition when they have families to raise. Avoid bread, whole peanuts and fat when chicks are in the nest. Remember to provide fresh water regularly. Enjoy your garden birds. Keep binoculars and a notebook by the window so you can make a note of any unusual species.
Bird Feeding Hygiene Keep feeders and bird tables cleaned regularly. Always wear gloves when handling bird feeders or wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Vary the area on which food is scattered and don’t allow piles of food to build up, this could attract rats and mice. Avoid the same food remaining in feeders for more than one week. Moving feeders and birdtables every couple of months can help prevent build up of droppings and disease. Please Please order your stocks between Oct/Mid Dec and Mid Jan/May – avoiding Christmas/New Year - and before your stocks run low. Buying larger quantities and sharing with friends/neighbours will save us time – and you money. We are still collecting old/repairable binoculars to donate to deserving projects. We are also collecting Bird Books which will either be added to our “Wildlife Explorers” Library or be sold to raise funds for RSPB projects. | |
